Cereal Bowls | Miam Miam Mushroom

Cereal Bowls | Frenchknicker

Ok, I love cereal. I also love yogurt and granola. I am also loving the idea of enjoying my favorite breakfast meals in cool serving dishes. I bring you a new series of posts dedicated to just this. Sweet ass cereal bowls. The first comes from Frenchknicker. I love the idea of using a milk drop as the formation of the bowl. Very clever, very cool. Cereal never looked more tasty than it does in this bowl.

Herb Lubalin

Design & Typo have a great collection of images from the most influential and inspirational designer of all time. He is a legend. His work was completely ahead of its time and to me still seems fresh and modern. He also designed my favorite typeface which is Avant Garde. I have the t-shirt to prove it. It’s by far the sexiest typeface in terms of clean modernity and legibility. The gothic alternatives are still a go-to trick for many designers. I even paid a little homage to Herb with the update of my site. An astute eye will make a notice of it. Herb, I am probably speaking for many designers such as myself when I say, “thank you.”

The Little Friends of Printmaking do some really fun and colorful work. Their posters are, as you guessed it, pretty cheap too. Go grab them now because they sell out quick. Here’s a little background info on them too for those who aren’t familiar with them courtesy of youworkforthem. Enjoy!

Posters | Burlesque

Burlesque Design has done some pretty dope and trippy posters. Most are for show promotions and all of them have a 60s/70s psychedelic vibe that I am all about. Most are at a triptastic $20 to $25 price range and are all screen printed on good paper. I bought a dope-ass Dr. Dre the Chronic poster that they unfortunately don’t have anymore. What is even more unfortunate is that my wife Ashley won’t let me hang a poster of Dr. Dre now that we’re married. Bummer! If anyone wants it I may part with it for a trade. It’s never been hung before and is super dope. Let me know if you’re interested.

Posters | The Beast is Back

Chris Lee is a pretty talented dude I met while freelancing at Buck. He does some really fun illustration work with a retro vibe to it. I spent a good 20 minutes or so trying to figure out which movies all of the characters from this poster came from. It’s for sale for only $15 at Gallery 1988. What a steal of a deal.

Posters | Aesthetic Apparatus

So a friend asked me recently, “do you know of any cool online poster places?” After spending some time going through my del.iciou.us bookmarked sites I came up with a few. Over the next few days/posts I will put some cool places to buy inexpensive art/design. Most of them, well I should say all of them, will probably cost you more to frame than to buy. These aren’t originals, mostly digital prints but they still look amazing and any wall would be happy to have it. So I bring you my old faithful, Aesthetic Apparatus who make amazing show posters for great live shows. They cover the gamut in styles and genres and are all screen printed. They are all around $20 or so which makes it even better. If you like one though, act fast because they sell out quickly. I made the mistake of waiting to buy the Roots poster they did and I still regret it to this day. Anywho, enjoy.

Eco Capitalists

Wired Magazine has an interesting article about Eco Capitalists who are buying patches of forrests around the world to not only help protect our planet but to make money. I am glad we are finally all starting to make a change in the way we think. The government is now putting prices on how much mother nature is worth. I also wanted to let you in on a cool project me and Stephen Kelleher are going to begin very soon. We are designing a poster in collaboration to help promote walking. Lately I have been walking everywhere, to work, to get groceries, to go to the beach and such. I don't drive some big SUV or anything but even cutting down on needing the Mini will help cut down on the amount of pollution I put out. I want to try to get other people I know to embrace this philosophy. Besides, it'll get you off your keister and get you some excersise. Look for the poster soon.

Feist

So I have a slightly new musical obsession. I first heard the song "My Moon My Man" on KCRW and was instantly hooked. I immediately got her 2 albums and have been listening non-stop ever since. Even when we were in Paris I couldn't escape her clutches. Her posters were all over the subways and at a hair salon I heard her playing. Feist is a former member of another favorite, The Broken Social Scene, and hails from Canada. Her music is soothing sultry jazzy indie pop. She covers all the bases really. I’d say from her 2 releases so far EVERY song is amazing. Go have a listen and you will see why I love her so. And she’s cute to boot.

Incase iPhone Cover

So for those of you, who are like me who bought your iPhone the day it came out, have realized what a slippery bar of techy soap it is. I bring you the solution. Incase's rubber protective cover. It’s a cool way to protect your phone while retaining the sexiness that allured us to the phone in the first place. It boasts the features of, maintaining access to all ports (that’s what she said), form fitting construction, camera lens cut-out, and anti-slide materials. It also has a cool topographic pattern that sort of looks like a wood grain. I bought it for mine and you should for yours too. It's relatively cheap at about $30 so go snatch one up now!

Miles Aldridge

Miles Aldridge is the son of art director Alan Aldridge. He is in my opinion, one of the top fashion photographers out there. His images are like snapshots from film noir, albeit slightly more glamourous. His use of saturated color and dramatic lighting is amazing and very inspirational.

Black on Black Jack

Next Poker Night you have why not impress your friends with how cool your taste is. These slick cards from Japan use a matte and gloss varnish in a minimal and stylish way. The illustrations on the face cards are very edgy and hip with silhouettes of nude women and revolvers. I think I am going to pick them up myself just because I love black on black shit. Check them out here for 1,575 yen or a less scary sounding $14 USD.

Negroni

This Italian concoction was invented in the early 1900s. Mixed with gin, Campari and sweet vermouth, it was named after Camillo Negroni in Florance who always ordered the same cocktail. Today Negroni is often consumed as a pre-dinner cocktail to stimulate the appetite for dinner. Aperitif is a European invention and it came to America in the early 1900s. Campari is also an Italian product, invented by Gaspare Campari in the early 1800s. If you like grapefruit juice then you’d probably love the Negroni. I am hooked. Next time you are out at a bar order one.

Serena HP Spot by Star Dust

My boy Richie Sandow just informed me the Serena HP spot he worked on at Star Dust is online and will be airing very soon. He said there was a team of at least 15 to tackle the behemoth of a piece. I think it turned out excellent and it stays in the language that Motion Theory set up but feels more designy now with a Star Dust twist to it. Great job, I can't wait to see what’s next for HP.

Herman Kim

So my postings have become incestual. George Katz designed and flashed our friend Herman Kim’s new portfolio site. Herman is a maya generalist and is a good one at that. So I feel I didn't give George the respect he deserves. I linked him on my welcome back posting at the very bottom and thought the 3 and a half people who visit this site (I have the stats to prove it) may have missed his awesome work. I worked with George over at Logan a while back and now we are hanging out at Blind together. He contributed to the iPod party spot I mentioned earlier in the blog as a designer/animator. He has some great work to show on his site which is a mix of his Minneapolis and his LA work. I put up some boards from a Honda spot we both pitched on at Logan. Go check it out NOW!!!

Back and More Married than EVER!!!

Hey there everybody. By everybody I mean the 2 or 3 who may visit this blog every week. I am back from Europe with my wifey Ash who recently resigned from Exopolis. Shapeshifter | Brian Jungen

So what do you do if you have a huge collection of sneakers like me yet you grow tired of the over-saturated market and trend that has become too popular. Do what Brian Jungen does and make beautiful art out of them. He takes what was already a very fashionable icon, the Air Jordans, and puts his own unique twist to them. The results are very reminiscent of aboriginal art. Check out the story on them here.

Summer Mixes

So I am sort of a dork when it comes to my music collection. I make a bunch of mixes/playlists all the time. Lately I have been favoring really chilled out music and put a bunch of mixes together. Over the next few weeks I will upload these mixes for you to download. I call these chill out mixes "Bohemian Modern" which I ripped off this cool book that I bought about Silver Lake and its surrounding areas. The secondary name is Ocean Park, the street I live on, because this breezy mix I listen to while at Santa Monica beach. Whatever the case may be these songs are perfect for the summer. So my boys Matt and Aaron have just unleashed the hurtin' at I-Manifest. This line is ill and I am not just saying that because I contributed a tee for them. Portals is the design I did. I am also feeling Urban Decay which changes colors in sun light and interior light. Please do my friends and me a favor and go buy some. It's summertime, you need new tees anyways.

Hand Job by Mike Perry

Mike is a friend I met online. He is a designer/illustrator who pretty much does everything by hand. Mike has recently released a cleverly titled book called Hand Job. Hand Job documents all of Mike's hand lettered type as well as found type. It's on sale at Amazon for pre-order and will be shipping in November. I can't wait to have it in my hands. Kudos Mike!

So I am sort of phasing out of the whole sneaker craze. I feel it is too saturated and everyone in LA has Jordan's with a matching tee some dark denim and a stupid bandana around their neck (it's the new popped polo apparently). If I see one more douche with a bandana I am going to give him a red bull special to the kidneys and make him piss blood for a week.
