News About the Blog

Hi all faithful visitors. I have tracked the stats and know there actually are more people coming to my blog than I had thought. I want to inform you that this blog will be closing down and moving to a new home. This will be happening next year along. Also next year will be a new update to my commercial portfolio as well as an online boutique I am getting off the ground finally. These 3 will be dropping on the same day most likely if all goes to plan. I’ll keep you updated. Thanks for being such great patrons to this blog!

I present to you this year’s edition. It’s too bad we aren’t having our annual Xmas party at our place. Last year’s was a blast but Ash is just too damn busy these days. Anywho, enjoy the mixes.

Transitional Kicks | Barker Black Derby Suede

For the real adventurous type who have around $750 to burn there are the Barker Black Derby Suede shoes. It sports a dark beige color, leather sole and an overall modern style with classic inspiration. It is versatile and very very well made. I have been obsessively checking ebay for a steal on them but no luck yet. If you want to pay full price you can at Colette.

Transitional Kicks | Wodehouse Black Oxfords

I am really into these Oxfords by Timberland Boot Co. No not the Timbalands that Das EFX sports. These are slightly more refined. Their products are designed as if passed through time, with only the essential elements remaining. Reminiscent of the dress shoes of the 20’s and 30’s but connected to today through well worn finishes, minimal pieces and lightweight supple leathers. They will set you back a little more than you are used to but come on, you could pretty much wear these with anything.

Transitional Kicks | The Deckard

I turned the big 30 this year. So like many other dudes out there who are probably in a similar situation you have to figure out a transition to real adulthood. This next series of posts will focus on kicks that are nice transitions from those tired ass dunks you are still trying to make look fresh to some really timeless pieces that are far more versatile and will actually get you laid. I don’t know what dude is pullin’ dimes with purple patent leather dunks with lime green laces but these Deckards by Vael may have you turning some heads. Nice mid top deck shoes that have some nice detail and will stand the test of time. Or at least more than the 2 months you’re used to before you can’t stand to look at those cheetah print and orange ostrich leather Air Force 1s collecting dust in your closet. They are even priced at a nice $130.

I Wear Your Shirt

In this up and down economy Jason is outsourcing his wardrobe (namely shirts) to corporate america and you!(and me) He’s going to wear a different shirt for 365 days straight in 2009, take multiple pictures throughout his day and blog about it. Days are sold at “face value” so January 1 is $1 and December 31 is $365. Makes me wish I thought of this. I bought March 19th because it’s the 78th day of the year, duh. I just hope come next year it will be money well spent. Buy your day here.

BBC “Star Trek” Gloves

So in relation to the trailer of the new Star Trek film I just posted I wanted to share these. I don’t know who is in the market for these, rich gangsta nerds, but they are pretty funny. I guess if Pharrell is rockin’ them then they have to be hot right? Buy them to sport at the premiere to the movie. If they aren’t absolutely ridiculously over priced like most of BBC’s clothing is then I would consider coppin’ them.

Star Trek

I am not even a Trekkie and this looks pretty damn good.

I Like to Rock It

Just stumbled upon this fun poster designed by Jaime Derringer. It’s a fun little poster that designer dorks like me would love for Christmas! It’s an 8x10 Epson print on premium matte paper but it’s pretty cheap at only $18 a copy. Mine will good in the office opposite the orange accent wall.

Ashi Dashi

My homie Ken Macy just launched his designer sock label Ashi Dashi. The line now is fully designed by Ken himself and there will be artist contributions soon including the likes of Emil Kozak and your truly. So treat your feet to some dopeness. They feel neglected anyways. Good holiday gift for friends this year! Congrats and good luck Ken!

New Reel & Site from Laundry!

New motion reel & site fresh out of the dryer from PJ & Crew. Keep rock rockin’ it!

Laid Back Like Grown Folks Volume 01

I know it’s been ages since I posted a mix. I hope the first installment of “Laid Back Like Grown Folks” makes up for the laziness on my part. This series is a hand crafted collection of breezy hip hop and instrumentals that picks up where the last few songs I have posted started. Try not to love it, I dare you. DOWNLOAD IT NOW!

(1) Azeem - Open ‘Em Up

The new Q-Tip album “Live at the Renaissance” is finally available. I have actually had many of the tracks for 3 years or so. The album was shelved for a while because of creative differences between Tip and his label. Now it’s out and I couldn’t be more excited. He is one of my all time favorite artists. This track is called “Life is Better” and features Norah Jones on vocals.

Small Sounds | Phonofone II

The Phonofone II is functional art. Not only does this all white ceramic beauty look sleek and retro but it sounds great too. It uses horn acoustics to amplify sound from your ear buds and the sound resonates. It’s available at A+R on Abbot Kinney or Silverlake. Or just visit their site and cop it there. Be prepared to spend about 500 bones though.

Small Sounds | Vers 1.5R & Vers 2X

The Vers 1.5R is a classicly and elegantly designed ipod dock. It’s constructed entirely of wood and comes in a variety of wood finishes like the Tivoli Model One (I prefer the Walnut). At around $200 (depending on finsih) it’s a wonderful price. If you need something a little fuller, try the Vers 2X. They both should fill any room with rich sound.

Small Sounds | Tivoli Model One

My next series of posts will focus on small sweet little music boxes. Nicely designed, compact, and great sounding. First off is the Tivoli Model One. This is that little stereo you see in every house in Dwell Magazine. It really is ubiquitous and deservingly so. It’s retro looks and great sound make it a favorite of every geeky audiophile. It comes in a selection of colors and wood finishes. Best of all, it’s only $300 so it won’t set you back an arm and a leg. Some of the finishes are unavailable at the moment but with it’s popularity I am sure they will be back in stock in no time.

Hot Chip “Ready for the Floor (live)”

One of my favorite songs of the last year or so. Here is an interesting version of it, slowed down and all romantic and stuff.

Dryer Buzzer “Huh”

My homie Matt just informed me he released his first full length album. His music is a mix of lo-fi, hip hop, garage, and avant garde. It’s sort of reminds me of Caural in that Matt plays all of the instruments and records and mixes it all himself. Congrats Matt! Go to his Myspace page to listen and download. Don’t forget to donate to his his cause for all of the hard work.

So we did it. America wins. To celebrate, Bran made some nice tees and totes to wear with pride. Go buy one and support the hope and dream that we pull ourselves out of this rut we have been in for the last 8 years.

Obama Ding Bats

Jeff Domke has been nice enough to make some Obama Dingbats for designer dorks like me and you. Go download them here to celebrate our new hope.

President Obama

Maybe it’s too early. What the hell. He has 283 electoral votes. I am in tears. Tears of joy. I can’t believe I am living in a historical period in our great country. I am so proud to be American. I am happy to say we all have made the right choice! The real victory is for all of us Americans. God Bless the USA!

L’Idiot Savant

I am loving this tee by Bill McMullen. Check it out at 2K.

Typotheque : Pocket Calendar

Do you need a new sketchbook? Do you like big chunky type? Well I do! Typotheque has released a nice limited edition pocket sized calendar/sketchbook. It includes most major international holidays on the calendar and a nice mix of graph paper patterns to doodle in. Pick it up here for about $20 depending on the currency conversion.

Eco Cool | Mini E

Available soon to the US is the Mini E, an ALL ELECTRIC 204 hp engine and a 0 to 60 in about 8 seconds. That’s a lot of pep for an electric! It can also travel up to 150 miles on a full charge. Speaking of charge, it only takes 2.5 hours to get a full charge. The only draw back, only 500 are going to be leasing in 3 states. California, New York, and New Jersey to commercial and private parties. I am working on getting on the list.

Eco Cool | Audi A1 Sportback Hybrid

This concept from Audi is probably the coolest looking hybrid vehicle concept out there. The Audi A1 Sportback is powered by a 1.4 liter TSI gas burning engine equipped with both a turbo and supercharger (INSANE RIGHT!) and a 20 kw electric motor. In Hybrid mode the 2 engines propel the A1 from 0 to 60 in like 8 seconds. Now that isn’t blistering fast but for a hybrid that is peppy. There is an all electric mode too that can drive for 60 miles without using gas. Not bad! All that and it looks pretty freakin’ hot. It’s slated for a 2009 production and should be hitting the US market for sure. I can’t wait personally, this could be my next car.

New Site & Blog on the way

Just so all of you who visit my blog (all 6 of you) know. I have a new portfolio site and fresh new blog on the way. This is why I have been so slow to post on my blog now. I am spending most of my free time getting those together. It should be with a month or so. Thanks for being patient. When they go live you should expect all of the old mixes I took down off this blog there as well as new ones. Thanks BLee for helping me out with Word Press too!

Tom Koh at Mobius Tonight

My homie Tom has an art opening at Mobius in K-Town tonight. If you live in LA check it out there should be some great work there. Congrats Tom!

Handlebar Staches

Are you an international man of mystery? Do you like Vaudeville theatre? Reenacting DDL’s epic There Will Be Blood performance? Love Rollie Fingers? If you are, now you can look the part. HWW Mannequins has a plethora of fake mustaches and beards to choose from. They range from $40 to $70. Just in time for Halloween. Joy!

Desperate For Love

Desperate For Love is a lush short film comprised in Bran’s Psst! Pass it On style involving some pretty stellar talents in the motion biz. Curated by Ryan Dunn of Vitamin Pictures, the six piece exquisite corpse moves from director to director with ease to the soundtrack of Over the Rhine’s aptly titled “Desperate for Love.” Great work everyone.

Young Guns 6

Here’s a shot of me and Stephen trying to get our drink on at the Young Guns 6 opening party. I as well as 49 other artists/designers were honored with our award that night. It really was an honor because there was such a great pool of people this year they had to choose from. View the winners work here.

Modern Rockers | Mod Rocker

The Mod Rocker by Iglooplay is probably the coolest chair you can buy for your kid. The form and material invite kids to play, read or simply relax. In the Walnut finish, my favorite, it looks incredible and comfortable. There is an option to add a seating pad but I like it without. The prices aren’t too bad either running in the range of $285 to $385 depending on the finish. My kids will definitely have one of these to sit and read in.

Modern Rockers | Savannah Rocker

The Savannah Rocker is designed by Jolyon Yates and is simply stunning. It’s a reclined rocker and has a flowing unibody construction. It is sculpted from birch ply. Prices are upon request so don’t expect this baby to come cheap. Think of it as functional art for your butt.

Sunday, September 21, 2008

Modern Rockers | Eames Shell Rocker

At a slight friendlier price of $450 is the classic Eames Molded Plastic Shell Rocker. They come in an assortment of colors and are actually pretty darn comfy. It may not be the most original choice but you can’t beat the classics right.

Tuesday, September 9, 2008

Modern Rockers | Stingray Rocker

I thought a nice series of postings would be modern rockers. To start this beautiful rocker designed by Thomas Pederson is absolutely perfect. It somehow feels modern and warm at the same time. It could be due to the warm molded wood or bright punch of warm green on the fabric upholstered version. It’s also insanely expensive so if you have about $4500 laying around then it is the option for you. This is definitely on the high end of the spectrum.

Happy 30th Birthday George

I just wanted to post a Happy 30th to George Strategakos. He’s one of my best friends from childhood. We’re still good homies. He’s practically my brother. In celebration I am posting this image from the Greek Islands. See you there next year for the big wedding celebration Geo. Hope you have a fun night out.

Mixes Are Coming Back

Hi everyone. I appreciate all of the suggestions for finding space for me to put up my mixes. I know it’s why most of you keep coming back to my blog. I love making mixes and even more sharing them with my friends so I found the solution. Check my mobile me idisk public page. Here I am uploading all of my past mixes so check back within the next few days to get the ones you may have missed so far. Thanks again for being patient. The link once again is here.

Over & Over by Mike Perry

While I was in Paris last week I saw Mike Perry’s new book “Over & Over” on the shelf of a hip clothing and book store. I was pretty psyched actually. I have been a fan of his work for a while way back before his books. I was in need of some dope hand drawn type and Mike was nice enough to lend me some for a project. Well anyways, the book is pretty much awesome so I’d drop by his site and shell out some lunch money. It showcases hand drawn patterns by artists and designers from around the globe including my buddies at I-Manifest. Maybe I should get Mike to put me in his next book. Hey Mike, I draw too!

Psst! Pass it On 3 Preview

Here is a sneak peak at me, Tom, and David’s contribution to Bran’s Psst! Pass it On 3 series. It’s a basic tale of fear, racism, and hate. The style is geometry meets film noir. Look for more in October when the entire series including many other awesomely awesome talents in the motion biz release them unto the world.

Si Scott Playing Cards for Smoke & Mirrors

Si Scott does what he does consistently and well. He makes beautiful flourishy type by hand. Now you can have his amazing talents on your next deck of cards. This deck by Smoke and Mirrors are beautifully crafted and look fully functional as a real playing deck, not just for show. Pick up a deck here at Theory 11, although I don’t see a price on them.

Old Mixes

So I have had quite a few requests for my old mixes to be uploaded. The unfortunate news is that I am out of space on my server with Media Temple and since I am uploading these out of the kindness of my heart I don’t see that happening as of now. I get really really cheap hosting with them now, it’s practically free, but to upgrade would mean me having to spend quite a bit more each month. If anyone has any solution or if I can get enough people who would donate to the cause (which I know may be illegal ) to help me cover the extra cost. The best I can do now is to say, check my blog out frequently and get the mixes while they are fresh out of the box. Thanks for all of the support and kind words though. I really do appreciate it!

Dryer Buzzer

My good friend Matt just informed me he independently released his first digital download album under the pseudonym “Dryer Buzzer.” I haven’t even listened to the whole thing yet but I know it HAS to be dope because he has been feeding me beats for years. Check out his myspace page to download the album and don’t forget to donate some money to his cause. Truly DIY, truly dope! Congrats homie, I hope to hear more in the future.

What’s Slydial? It’s a pretty cool free phone service that let’s you go straight to someone’s voicemail without having to actually call them. Why would you want to do this? To avoid an awkward conversation, to save time, or to call someone you know who is in a meeting or can’t pick up. My favorite possible scenario is that I get a lot of calls from numbers I don’t recognize that don’t leave me a voicemail. With this you can slydial the number and wait to hear the voicemail. The process is simple too. You just dial their phone number, follow a prompt, enter the number you want to slydial, then you will hear their voicemail. Pretty cool service that may come in handy from time to time.

My current dream car is this amazing auto. It doesn’t get much better than this. It will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine.

Acacia Bar

I just found the perfect mini bar that has that mid-century feel but is highly affordable. The Acacia Mini-Bar at CB2 not only looks good it is great for stashing your spirits and barware. The finish is beautiful and the price is even sexier at only $400.

Makr | Fine Leather & Fabric

Makr creates some really unique styles of wallets made from leather and fabric. They are all made in limited quantities and each sport a unique pattern or texture or image. Great as a gift or to sport on your own as they are priced at $100 or less. Check more out here.

Nike Hyperdunks Finally Released

Nothing says “The Future” like shoes designed in the late 1980s. Nike finally answered our prayers, and 3 year old petition we all signed, by releasing the Hyperdunks from Back to the Future 2. Only they didn’t really release them really (they aren’t exactly the same), they limited them to 350 and they sold out instantly of course. Now fanboys will have to pay a cool $2K on ebay for them. Kinda messed up but that is the nature of the sneaker collecting beast. Die hard heads with little to no life other than collecting waited in line for up to 24 hours to see if they could get their hands on a pair. Kobe Bryant rolled up in a Delorean and made a cameo at the Main Street location of Undefeated to sign 10 pairs. If they actually become somewhat attainable I’ll try to cop a pair. But that is highly unlikely I am sure of it.

Bran is at it again!

Bran just keeps the hits coming. Now he’s gone and updated his site with all the new great projects including his contribution to our “Drive Less“ series. We’ll get an official site up soon for that too. I really like Bran’s addition to our series which includes other designers I invited. In the meantime, go look at all of Bran’s funtastic work.

Chester French

My latest music obsessions has been Vampire Weekend and now Chester French. They both have this Ivy League prep school vibe that feels so fresh and so clean right now. Think Weezer back in ’94. They have gotten quite the buzz lately too. Pharrell Williams is hot on their stuff and signed them to Star Track records. They have a forthcoming album to be released sometime this year so keep an eye and an ear out for that. In the meantime listen to them on their Facebook page.

BDJ Diverse’s “Escape Earth” for Adult Swim

So Bran is at it again. He’s so hot right now. This time with a quirky music video for Diverse called “Escape Earth” as a team up with Damien Correll. Great job guys, while you’re at it download the World Wide Renewal Program mp3 mix for free on the Adult Swim site. Wow, Bran has been busy!
