Over & Over by Mike Perry

While I was in Paris last week I saw Mike Perry’s new book “Over & Over” on the shelf of a hip clothing and book store. I was pretty psyched actually. I have been a fan of his work for a while way back before his books. I was in need of some dope hand drawn type and Mike was nice enough to lend me some for a project. Well anyways, the book is pretty much awesome so I’d drop by his site and shell out some lunch money. It showcases hand drawn patterns by artists and designers from around the globe including my buddies at I-Manifest. Maybe I should get Mike to put me in his next book. Hey Mike, I draw too!

Dryer Buzzer

My good friend Matt just informed me he independently released his first digital download album under the pseudonym “Dryer Buzzer.” I haven’t even listened to the whole thing yet but I know it HAS to be dope because he has been feeding me beats for years. Check out his myspace page to download the album and don’t forget to donate some money to his cause. Truly DIY, truly dope! Congrats homie, I hope to hear more in the future.

New Frankenstyles

My good buddy Stephen Kelleher, and ”Drive Less/Walk More” partner, just updated his site. He is featuring the first print from our series of posters to promote alternate ways of transportation. Part of the proceeds from each sale are going to charity to help preserve our planet and keep it green and mean. Look for my design as well as a collaboratively designed poster in the near future. We will have it all organized and set up soon. I’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, go feast your eyes on Stephen’s wacky world of art and graphics.

Hot Chip Poster | Blanka

I stumbled upon a super limited edition of a nice poster of the artwork that was used on Hot Chip’s latest album (which happens to be amazing) on the UK based Blanka site. The run is limited to only 75 printed grey on 3M celloglas bronze foil paper. It’s priced at £50 so if you are in the US it would cost you about $100. Not too shabby considering the limited quantity for a work of art. If they still have some in stock I may have to drop the coin.

Happy Easter

Easter came really really early this year. I found an artist who made a portrait of Jesus out of Peeps to mark the occasion. It took 494 Peeps to make it happen but I think it looks pretty sweet. No pun intended. It took Janet, the artist, 3 years to collect enough Peeps to bring her idea to life. For more on it check her site out here.

NEUARMY

Ryan Katrina aka NEUARMY (an online buddy of mine) just updated his site with some really beautiful new work. Drop by and check it out. I particularly like the letterpress typography he’s been working with lately. Great work homie.

Two Lines Align

Last night me and Ash went to the ”Two Lines Align” show at the Redcat in downtown LA. It was a joint show of Geoff McFetridge and Ed Fella. The space wasn’t too large but there was a lot of work piled in there. Geoff’s reserved and iconic work surrounded you, transporting you to a graphic world of teeth and doodles and everything else in his hand-drawn world. Ed’s work was mostly his typographical explorations he has been doing for as long as I can remember but it was nice seeing it all together finally. I met and spoke with Geoff for a little which was nice. I have been a pretty big fan of his for quite some time. Ash embarrassed me a little because that’s what she does best. The event was curated by Michael Worthington who also compiled a nicely designed program that most everyone there bought and had signed (including me).

Obama Art

So everyone has seen Sheppard Fairey’s Obama Posters but now it seems like everyone is doing them. I just found this link with a plethora of Obama inspired art. I think it’s great personally that so many people are getting involved with this election. My vote personally goes to Obama as well, although I am sure my endorsement isn’t quite as important as let’s say Oprah’s. I am really excited about the future of our government and hope that our country can dig itself out of the hole that Bush has put us in.

Walnut Wallpapers | Geoff McFetridge

I just stumbled upon this rad wallpaper producer in LA that has a great series of wallpapers designed by some of my favorite artists/designers. Geoff McFetridge happens to be not only of my favorites, but one of those designers. They have 3 choices of designs from him, one of whales which I am sure my wife will love, and the other of his trademark yeti. I am on the phone as we speak getting prices. I have a few blank walls just begging to be covered so I am crossing my fingers that it’s not too pricey. Go look for yourself here.

Geneviève Gaukler | Pierre and Food Chain

Geneviève Gaukler is one of my favorite artists/designers. She pretty much brought cute characters back in style. And now you can buy one of her iconic characters in toy form. No it’s not just another vinyl toy by some artist. This is something new and original. I think I’ll figure out the Euro to USD conversion and order mine. I am guessing it’s just under $100 but totally worth it in my opinion because these will be worth something in the future, all the way in the year 2000. Drive your virtual Delorian over to We Sold Out and buy one.

Gallery 1988 | Tribute to Stan Lee

If you live in LA like me then you owe it to yourself to drop by Gallery 1988 on Melrose to check out the art inspired by the legend Stan Lee. As most shows at this gallery we have geekster staples, like Nintendo and Marvel Comics, reinterpreted in fresh and hip styles. Many of today’s promising artists have contributed to the collection and I have to say they are fun and original tributes. In the meantime stop by this blog to see some of the pieces.

Adam Parker Smith

I just discovered the work of Adam Parker Smith who creates sculptures of severed heads made entirely of felt. Since I have a soft spot for gore and horror these are right up my alley. The style and implied details are pretty amazing and the craft is superb. It’s like some twisted riff off of Jim Henson. All can be seen at his first solo show entitled Bold as Love at the Priska C. Juschka Fine Art Gallery in New York City. Man I keep seeing these great shows in NY so I can’t wait for next summer when Ash and I go.

Urban Medium | Vader Helmet

How rad is this? This amazing radness is part of a recent show in LA celebrating the 30 years of Star Wars. For geeks like me this is an orgy of design and sci-fi. I hope there are more of these coming. Maybe next we can paint over old 8bit NES systems and put those in a gallery. Sign me up for that!

Little People

Little People is the installation/photographer work of Slinkachu from London. The work is about tiny vignettes of life in miniature scale. Where his characters are placed in situations with life sized objects. His installation for the Nuart show is extremely detailed and focused, witty and tragic. Check out all his work at his blog.

Disposable : The History of Skateboard Art

I used to skate, back when I was like 8-14 in age. Recently my wife saw a family skating down Ocean Park and it made me think, maybe we should do that. So it inspired me to try to track down my beloved boards of the 80s on ebay. I have always been into deck art. Not the trendy stuff you see now-a-days. Although some I have seen by my peers have been pretty dope and I was even going to do a deck for Element but it fell through. I did however come across the link to this site that sort of tracks the history of skate decks. I must say, from what I have seen it looks like an AMAZING collection of images that will inspire me for many a days.

Still Room Studio

Still Room Studio is the online portfolio of illustrator/artist Jen Renninger. What initially caught my eye was her studies on mid-century furniture a-la Eames. I am a big fan of mid-century furniture, like most artsy fartsy types, and really dig her style in which she did these tributes in. Her other work is really nice too. It’s warm and cozy like a vintage ad from the 50s. You can buy prints of her work at her Etsy store. I may get the Eames lounge chair print.
